Thinking about becoming a loan officer part II

When many people are considering a new job, the priorities are commonly things like pay rate, hours required, benefits, and even location. Very few people actually know what the stress level of certain jobs can be, nor do they understand what the physiological effects of?prolonged stress can be. Becoming a loan officer has its many benefits, but it has been known to be a highly stressful position. Here are some of the effects that short term and long term job stress can have on your body.

First lets understand what stress is. Stress is a normal physiological response of the body to hostile environment. It is our body?s way of handling its ?fight or flight? challenge. When presented with stressful situations, our body will?respond by making functional changes. When the threat in the environment no longer exists, the response decreases. The body may have to deal with short term or long term stress periods.

Some of?these?functional adjustments which are responsible for the short term effects are

  • Diversion of the blood from less vital to more vital organs.
  • Increase in the heart rate to supply more blood quickly.
  • Increase in the blood pressure to supply blood efficiently.
  • Increase in the respiratory rate to get more oxygen from the atmosphere.
  • Breakdown of glycogen stores in liver and muscle to get more glucose.
  • Formation of more glucose from non carbohydrate substances.

When the stress factor is persistent or repetitive, the body keeps secreting the stress hormones and their blood levels remain continuously at a higher level and hence the associated functional adjustments. The body now experiences stress with extra burden due to the side effects of the persistently high stress hormones. Long term stress requires the body to bulk up its defense.?Cortisol, also known as hydrocortisone, is a hormone from the adrenal cortex that is released?as a result of long term stress.?It builds up in the arteriole walls and stimulates vasoconstriction, which causes the arteries to constrict. Over time the walls become weak and the blood pressure builds.?

High blood pressure is one of the top symptoms of long term stress. Always check with your doctor if you feel you have symptoms of high blood pressure, which may include:

  • Chronic head ache
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety disorder
  • Substance abuse
  • Memory disturbances
  • Heart attack due increased blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol
  • Stroke due to similar reasons
  • Weight loss
  • Exacerbation of allergies including asthma
  • Irritable Bowel disease
  • Ischemic Bowel disease like Crohn?s disease
  • Decreased sexual drive
  • Sleeplessness
  • Not all cortisol is bad. In fact, athletes will have higher levels of cortisol?to maintain enough energy for the body during exercise. However, if it stays elevated after exercise, then it may be a problem.

Being a loan officer can be a very stressful position. A new loan officer has a lot of pressure to generate new contacts and leads, which an established loan officer already has contacts to work with. Many aspects of the job are very volatile and require an extreme amount of attention in order to avoid error. The longer a loan officer practices, the easier it becomes.

Starting a new position can be tough in any industry. Many?job are stressful regardless of how much time you have spent in the position.?Learn the recognise the above signs in order to avoid potential health problems and maintain regular visits to your physician.
